Custom workout program design and tracking app
I’ve worked on this app for myself over a few days. It is a work in progress and good enough that I decided to share it because someone might find it interesting or inspiring. The templates and apps for personal trainers and workout management I have published so far have had lots of interest, and this app is a further development of that concept.
Rather than being in cloud software such as Notion, Airtable, or Softr, this app runs locally, just for myself on the computer. The workflow for building a training program fits how I currently like to design programs, and the interface is clean and minimal, with only the necessary elements.
The app does two main jobs currently:
-
Enables a streamlined program creation workflow, with a spreadsheet-like experience and a modern interface and data architecture.
I can create a new program from scratch, or duplicate an existing one as a starting point.
In the setup, I will define the program duration (in weeks), and its start date. This will automatically create a dedicated interface for each week, where I can manipulate exercises, sets, reps, and other data associated with each session.
Each day of the program can contain multiple sessions (e.g., a morning strength session and an afternoon martial arts practice), which are tracked independently in the calendar.
I can select exercises from a library, broken out by movement pattern and muscle group, easily filterable directly from the dropdown menu, where I can also add new movements without leaving the interface.
I can copy a week to subsequent ones and manipulate anything as needed, since each session is independent.
While assembling the program, a side panel shows the set volume per muscle group for the whole week, and I can also enter a Comparison mode to view how set volume varies across weeks.
-
Automatically shows all program sessions in a calendar, where I can review and track each session’s exercises.
All the data stays local (there’s no cloud database in the backend). This means I can’t use the app on the phone, which is ok. If I change my mind, I could deploy the project on a hosting platform and access it from any device; or run a weekly sync of the sessions to Notion, so I can view them in the Notion mobile app.
I consider this an interesting experiment in using AI Coding Agents (Cursor and Codex, in this case) to build custom software I wish existed but doesn’t yet.
